Coimbra is the largest municipality in Central Portugal’s Beira Litoral region, with over 140,000 inhabitants and a seasonal population of approximately 200,000 residents. It is a major hub for interregional bus services, connecting the city to other parts of Portugal and abroad.

The modal distribution of transport in Coimbra is dominated by individual transport, with 70% of journeys made by private cars, 17% by public transport, and 11% by soft modes such as walking and cycling.
