Serviços Municipalizados de Transportes Urbanos de Coimbra (SMTUC) are a municipal structure dedicated to ensuring the Public Road Transport Service for Passengers in the Municipality of Coimbra, with the main objective of satisfying the mobility and accessibility needs of the population, guaranteeing the social function and the sustainability of the service provided. During 2022 the regular public transport network of SMTUC have offered 5,931 million kilometres in 110 lines for the transportation of 9,801 million of passengers via 172 buses that include 13 electric buses standard and 16 electric minibuses (more 22 electric buses during 2023). SMTUC also operates a lift and a special on demand service (door-to-door) for people with reduced mobility.
The role of SMTUC in the SUM project is to implement on-demand transport services in Coimbras peripheral and low-density areas, focusing on those ones with low accessibility and vulnerable-to-exclusion groups including young and elderly. That service will provide first/last mile access to the systematically operated PT system.
