Jerusalem: preparing for urban renewal

Jerusalem’s Living Lab (LL), in the southwest of the city, is currently undergoing urban renewal and includes the neighbourhoods of Kiryat Yovel and Ir Ganim. These areas are undergoing significant change, with sold out housing projects.

To accommodate the expected increase in traffic, the municipality is proactively planning new road sections with wide sidewalks, dedicated cycle lanes, priority lanes for public transport and public lifts to help pedestrians navigate the city’s steep hillsides.

Several local transport initiatives are particularly noteworthy. The JERUFUN bicycle rental programme was recently expanded to include eighty new stations across Jerusalem, including eleven within the Living Lab. This expansion promotes sustainable mobility and provides residents with convenient access to cycling options. In addition, the extension of the Red Line light rail system will introduce twelve new stations, six of which are strategically located within the Living Lab. This line, which is currently being tested, connects residents to major employment centres and the renowned Hadassah Hospital, improving connectivity and accessibility.

Looking ahead, the future Purple Line, due to be operational by 2030, will further develop the Living Lab’s transport network by adding three more stations. This expansion will continue to support the area’s growth and development, ensuring that residents have efficient and sustainable transport options.
