Penteli’s push for e-Bikes, MaaS and safer roads

Penteli Living Lab continues to devote efforts in implementing push and pull measures and interventions in favour of sustainable modes. Recent achievements and future activities are summarised as follows:

Recent Achievements

Pull measures

  • E-Bike sharing scheme

The Living Lab of Penteli has already installed six docking stations in strategic locations, equipped with a total of 38 electric bikes. These stations and e-bikes are fully operational, providing an eco-friendly and free transport solution for everyone in the community.

  • Mobility hub creation

Penteli has designed a Mobility Hub identity  and different  totems with information both in English and in Greek that will be installed soon in a central location with mixed land uses and a plentiful of activities. The totem contains information about e-bikes, local and metropolitan public transport, cycling/walking routes and ride hailing services, being the “mobility heart” of the Penteli.

Push-pull measures

  • Redistribution of road space

The city has taken retroffiting actions to widen urban street in order to improve road safety and prioritise public space for active modes are underway. These interventions are expected to transform streets from traffic conduits into safer and more accessible spaces for all. Widening sidewalks, crosswalks, creation of cycle lanes/tracks and street furniture will be the key steps for remaking the street realm in Penteli.

Outlook for the next months

Looking ahead, Penteli is ready to implement additional measures to enhance shared mobility services and multimodality:

Regarding push measures, the city is planning to implement speed reductions on several streets within the neighbourhoods of the municipality very soon (early 2025), transforming them into cycle streets, to enhance road safety and promote less car-oriented urban environment.

When it comes to push measures, the municipal public transport service will be re-introduced within 2025. Some of these local public transport routes will connect the various neighbourhoods of Penteli effectively. Plus, this local bus service will play a feeder role at the main network, enabling the piloting of the scheduling integration tool developed in the context of SUM. What is more, two electric buses will be purchased for advancing clean and green mobility in Penteli LL.

Finally, in the context of the project, a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform will be developed. This platform is a pioneer endeavour for Penteli LL and Greece in general and will integrate ride-hailing services with e-bikes, offering seamless transport options across different modes. Right now, the platform is under development, testing different types of interface and capabilities.
