Safer bike lanes, co-creation and data collection on Fredrikstad

Fredrikstad is rolling out a series of updates to its urban mobility infrastructure, focusing on smarter data collection, safer cycling routes, and community-driven solutions. These efforts are part of the Fredrikstad Living Lab’s work to create a more sustainable and inclusive transport system.

AI-powered counters for better traffic monitoring

To improve traffic data collection, Fredrikstad is replacing older in-ground sensors with new counters using AI-driven cameras or radar. These devices can monitor both cyclists and pedestrians, providing more comprehensive insights for planning. The new technology is also more flexible and cost-efficient than previous solutions. Two counters will be installed at new locations this winter.

Safer cycling routes with red asphalt lanes

In the city centre, nearly one kilometre of new bike lanes with red asphalt has been completed, offering cyclists a safer and more connected network. An additional 300 metres of bike lanes will be added in spring 2025, linking a key entry route to the central network and further enhancing cycling infrastructure.

Collaborative workshop to explore mobility hubs

Fredrikstad recently hosted a co-creation workshop facilitated by Chalmers University of Technology. The session brought together local stakeholders, students from Østfold University College, and mobility experts to explore new services and business opportunities around mobility hubs. The workshop was praised for its collaborative approach, with participants contributing fresh ideas to shape future urban mobility projects.

Maintaining momentum despite challenges

Fredrikstad’s focus on zero-growth policies and sustainable mobility continues despite budget constraints and urban transition challenges. By prioritising innovative technology, infrastructure, and community engagement, the Living Lab is setting a strong example for sustainable urban development.
